The Yale Public Humanities Working Group presents: Beyond the Dissertation: A Conversation with Prof. George Sánchez
Friday, April 24, 2026 at 1:30pm
HQ 113 (320 York Street)

Beyond the Dissertation invites graduate students and early career scholars in the public humanities to discuss mentorship and professionalization strategies with Professor George Sánchez. We will attempt to demystify the “hidden curriculum” of doctoral study by speaking openly about the explicit and implicit professional expectations that community-engaged scholars encounter during and after the PhD program. Our conversation will consider topics like strategies for navigating pre-candidacy, forging mentorship relations, working with organizations that support community-engaged research, bridging our own scholarship into public facing work, preparing for the academic job market, and co-creating scholarship with non academic communities.

George J. Sánchez is Professor of American Studies & Ethnicity, and History at the University of Southern California.

Lunch will be served. RSVP here
