“The Presidency and the News Media: New Challenges to Institutions and Legitimacy” Jennifer Hopper, Political Science, SCSU

February 1, 2019

Jennifer Hopper, Professor of Political Science as Southern Connecticut State University, gave a brilliant talk to an enthusiastic audience ready to engage in an important conversation about our current moment in American Democracy. Professor Hopper discussed how the Office of President of the United States has an incredible amount of power to shape how the media discusses public policy - but with certain limits, such as an effective and decentralized communication with their political allies and only during a certain period of time. Hopper took the fascinated audience through the discussions about the Affordable Care Act during the Obama presidency (2009-2012) and how “Obamacare” turned from a negative word to a positive word as the president’s office began shaping the discussions around the new health care law and initiatives.
