Arts Research
Students wishing to explore the intersections between scholarly research and artistic work can undertake archivally-driven projects in the performing or visual arts. Events and projects sponsored by Public Humanities include “The Geneva Project,” a dance piece based upon photographs from the Farm Security Administration archive; “Sounding New Haven,” an exhibit devoted to the history of music in New Haven, whose sound design included performances of 19th-century sheet music discovered at the New Haven Historical Society; and the annual History Slam, a communal event based on the later work of Howard Zinn, in which community members “perform” historical documents such as legal transcripts or historic oratory. Public Humanities projects have brought together students from across the humanities, as well as from the Drama School, the Music School, the Art School, and Yale Dance Theater.
